Identity option developed for

the Nakashima Exhibition 2016

The National Institute of Design will celebrate this association with one of the unique personalities of design,

with a series of activities and events through which we can rediscover and revisit the work, life and ethos of George Nakashima, and also build new connections, through interaction and discourses. This Event which would basically be about Discovering Nakashima, where we will be talking about his life and philosophy on one hand and on the other, the ethos and spirit that he stood for. A visual Identity of any event should speak out to the audience about it’s association with the subject and also about the purpose of the event. It serves as an instant recognition factor to the stake holders and others too. In this particular instance, it’ll internally encompass various events such as the Exhibition, Workshop, Symposium, Competition etc under one common roof.

Nakashima’s approach to woodworking was to respect the tree. His life had two strong influences – one of Japanese woodworking tradition and sensitivity in dealing with a natural material like wood.

The Celebrating Nakashima 2016 identity depicts a simplidied version of a Butterfly joint which is an iconic representation of Japanese carpentary that Nakashima embraced and adapted vastly in all his work. The joint is also very symbolic of exhibiting natural flaws and strengthening them by joining them, thus working with nature and not against her.
