Communication collateral for the Essential Newborn Care Kit with Ayzh
This project was done with Ayzh to help them develop communication collateral for their upcoming products
in essential newborn care, safe birth and menstrual hygiene. This also helped them standardise the visual language, streamline the communication development process and evolve as product lines under a single brand. A lot of these products were in pilot stage, design involvement thus shaped the detailing of training and curriculum in many ways
Initial
Understanding
The “SHISHU” HEALTHY NEWBORN KIT is the latest innovation from ayzh on the continuum of maternal and newborn healthcare. The kit prevents newborn deaths associated with hypothermia, infection, and asphyxia by empowering healthcare workers and mothers with tools and information for essential newborn care through the birthing process and first 28 days of life. The contents of the kit adhere to the WHO recommendations to ensure the “clean chain” for infection reduction, the “warm chain” for thermal care and early feeding support; essential to early neonatal health care. The United Nations recognises our kit as a “high impact commodity that can improve newborn health and survival.”

The Contents
Hygiene Care (Clean Chain):
- Mucus extractor to relieve nasal congestion and ease breathing
- Chlorohexadine ointment for umbilical cord care, to prevent infection
- Gauze and cotton balls for wiping the eyes and cord
- Receiving blanket for receiving the baby, swaddling, and transport
during immediate newborn care (one time use)
- Towel for use at home after bathing the baby

Thermal Care (Warm Chain):
- Thermometer to detect potential hypothermia
- Hat, Socks, Dress with Booties, and Blanket with Hood to prevent heat loss from head, hands & feet
Additional Baby Care:
- Pictorial breastfeeding and newborn care guide
- Mobile Training on newborn care for mother and health care
providers in preferred language & time
Initial Sketches
and Visual Language

The visual language had to be universal, with minimal colours and had to follow the brand colour. Since the warm colour pink was already used in their other Maternal Health Care products, it had to be a separate entity but yet within the brand products
Clean Chain Steps
The first eight steps talks about the procedure to be done right after the baby is born. It focuses on the cleaning procedure as instructed by the WHO six cleans

The next steps assure that the newborn baby is kept warm enough in order to maintain the sudden change of the temperature and to prevent hypothermia in neonats
Warm Chain Steps

The secondary design outcome was a poster with all the Shishu steps that could be used as communication collateral for the detailing of the curriculum and would act as a major reference material on field in addition to the manuals to be circulated
